The Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, Tirunelveli, the foremost among the 10 Regional Forensic Science Laboratories of the Forensic Sciences Department,was started in the year 1978 vide G.O.Ms. No. 821 Home (Pol.) Dept., dated 17.04.1978 with Toxicology and Biology Divisions at the Tiruenelveli Medical College campus, Tirunelveli. Vide order G.O.Ms.No.748/Home (Police.18) Dept.,dt. 29.08.2005, the construction of separate ,spacious building with adequate infrastructure was undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation and was completed during November 2007 in the present location. At present this laboratory renders Forensic services by examining exhibits concerned in criminal cases pertaining to Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi,Tenkasi and Kanyakumari Districts pertaining to Biology,Narcotics, Prohibition and Toxicology cases.
