Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, Coimbatore was established in the year 1974 vide G.O Ms 957, (HOME) dt 18/04/1974 with Toxicology as its prime division in the campus of the Office of the Deputy Director, Public Health Services, Coimbatore District. On the merger of Prohibition and Excise laboratories with the Tamilnadu Forensic Science Laboratory in 1980, analysis of Prohibition cases (Analysis of Illicit Arrack / IMFS, Toddy etc.,) started in this laboratory. Excise unit was established as per the Government Order G.O. Ms 140, Prohibition & Excise VII, dt 23.07.91 to undertake the analysis of blending unit samples (Rectified /Neutral spirit, Whisky, Rum, Brandy, Gin etc.) received from nearby distilleries. Narcotics unit was established vide Order NO A1/19663-90-1 dt 06.02.1993 of the Director, Forensic Sciences Department, Chennai-04 from 01/03/1993 as an ad-hoc measure to analyse “Ganja” samples only. As per the Government order vide G.O Ms No 605, Home (POl XVI) Department dt 01.06.1994, Biology unit was established. Serology unit was sanctioned vide G.O Ms No 870, Home (Police 18) dt 09. 12. 2012 to undertake blood grouping/origin analysis and started functioning from February 2018 onwards. A special unit “Computer Forensics” was sanctioned vide G.O. Ms No 607 HOME (POLICEXVIII)DEPARTMENT dt 28.07.2017 and started functioning from 17/05/2018 onwards. Six Mobile Forensic Science Laboratories Coimbatore City, Coimbatore, Erode, The Nilgiris, Tiruppur and Tiruppur City are under the administrative control of this laboratory.
